Certificate of Veterinary Nursing in Emergency & Critical Care
This is a new forum for any Cert VN ECC students who have any questions or queries about the Certificate, or to just chat amongst yourselves to see how you're getting on.
Your tutors will be popping in every so often as well, so they should be able to help with any problems you might have.
For any prospective students looking for a bit more information you can visit our website at www.vets-now.com/vets/cpd-training or email vncertecc@vets-now.com but feel free to have a look around whilst you're here!

Ive just sent off my enrolement form. Excited but nervous as havent studied for over 14 years!! Probabley be on here alot me thinks. Any tips for a stress free studying?
i've just booked on for the april start date. ive only been qualified 2 years and after qualifying I said that I didn't want to see another exam again and yet im currently doing a behaviour course and starting this is april. I must be mad!
firstly good on you :-) secondly don't stress and fret. I think the thing is to make sure you put time aside each week dedicated to studying and have order to your studying so it's easy to look back through your work.
I have this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Veterinary-Technicians-Manual-Emergency-Critical...
and its fab real source of info.
Another thing is to enjoy it and don't be afraid to ask questions on here and to question the vets you work with as to what they are doing and why etc
I started in Sept and am enjoying it along with working ooh and 4 children :-o
Good luck
link may be of use especially for unit 2

Thats great, thanks so much for replying :) x
Thats great, thanks so much for replying :) x
Also if any of the vets in your clinics have a copy of Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Disorders in Small Animal Practice, esp. latest (4th edition), ed. Stephen P. diBartola, I think there is a very comprehensive discussion in there.
Hi
See the new PDF attachment above - Kirby's Rule of 20
enjoy!
Sorry, have not been on here for quite a while. Firstly, very nerve wracking waiting for assignments to return, Secondly, i have found the BEST way of getting fab journals is by asking vets at the practice if i can look at the places they are subscribed to. In practice and vet record was a contribution from one of the vet - great! Although careful when looking at the date the journal was produced, some are very old and out of date.
I was told that anything in the last 3-5 years is ideal, and always look for the most recent for current topics/issues.
Looking forward to spending FAR more time on the next three assignments, as submission dates come far too fast.
Could anyone advise me on the examination date for the exam in March 2012-- I'm worried that I may be trying to be in two places at once !!
Thanks
Just wondering if the structure of the assignments are strict? Reason is that one of my assignments I havent answered the 'assignment/questions' as a) b) c) etc rather intergrated into one whole essay/report?
Would that be accepted?
Thanks in advance
Hi PEA!!
I think your assignments are fab and you'll be fine. Thanks loads xxx
Got my confirmation email through - I'm all signed up for April 2012! Has anyone got any recommended reading before the course starts? Thanks.
I have found the Battaglia book 'Small animal emergency and critical care' really good but journals are great for discussion. Try signing up to some of the sites. Lots of the other girls have given some good recommendations for these lower down in the discussion. Good luck, it's lots of fun, and surprisingly makes everyone in the practice ant to implement new things. This is what it's all about.

General emergency and critical care books and articles, Vet nurse website often have good items on drains, transfusions and so do this website in the forums so its worth coming back on here and monitoring them, sorry thats a general answer but I dont think you can read the wrong books before hand for general knowledge :-) x
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roper–Logan–Tierney_model_of_nursing
Not sure if this helps but this is one of the possible care plans that can be implemented into the veterinary world, based on humans but obviously can change a few things to alter it for animals i.e washing and dressing for grooming and cleaning etc. There is also a 8 step care plan which I am trying to recall.
I have also ben on the vet nurse website which also had this item, I hope some of this is helpful
http://www.vetnurse.co.uk/wikis/veterinary-nurse/nursing-care-plan.aspx
There is actually a care plan that has been written for veterinary nurses.
The Ability model was devised by Hillary Orpet & Andrea Jeffory in 2007 for veterinary use. it is based on / adapted from the RLT & Orem care plans for human nursing. There are very few articles on the subject, most are in the VNJ. If you want to know the exact volumes, editions, & pages they are on left me know.
That would be greatly appreciated if you would let me know, struggling with that part of the assigment and to know exactly how to do it, mad isn't it that we learn about them when training, then very little or few practices implement nursing/care plans. But would be great if they became more integrated into practices more often.
I think you mean Orems model
For the eight step care plan?
Yes, the 2 models that are used in VN training are Roper, Logan & Tierney and the Orems model
Thanks I could remember Roper, Logan and Tierney but I could just not remember Orem, thanks. How you finding the assigments? x
hi all new students ! i hope your settling into the course and enjoying your first units and assignments , Shailen is a great source for articles ! A lot can be found as someone has said on google scholar and ivis , also look at www.vasg.org for all things pain and anaesthesia related if your struggling contact your tutors we are here to help but this is a great forum to discuss how your getting on and any problems your having I am one of the tutors for the course and will try and check back regularly as well I know how hard it is to study with work family , dogs husbands etc so please be re-assured it can be done just need to get back into the swing of it any particular problems you are having you can e-mail your allocated tutor or can e-mail me farnhamsvn@vets-now.com and will see if i can help
PS i struggled with nursing plans to start with as well as qualified in the days of the little green book ! Dont worry all tutors will give you guidance and feedback on your assignments but think best advice is look at what you would do with a particular patient as far as its nursing care and then depending on the nursing plan you are going to use see where it fits in - ie environment for a rta cat with shattered pelvis would be padded bedding , ways to maintain hygiene and secure small cage etc etc does that help ?

Being a bit of a "young 'un" I was taught care plans... As Kath has mentioned, care as well as clinical needs should be included, the aim is to achieve holistic patient care addressing all needs, i.e not just disease driven inputs

Hi All,

Can anyone help??
Cheers Mel
Hi,
I also started in the Sep intake.
like you I am struggling with the care plan as never done one either. Did you find anything usefull? I tried google but not a lot there!
Thanks Gemma x
I found this and thought it was a pretty good analogy:
You are driving along and suddenly you hear a bang, you start having trouble controlling your car's direction and it's hard to keep your hands on the steering wheel. You pull over to the side of the road. "What's wrong?" you're thinking. You look over the dashboard and none of the warning lights are blinking. You decide to get out of the car and take a look at the outside of the vehicle. You start walking around it. Then, you see it. A huge nail is sticking out of one of the rear tires and the tire is noticeably deflated. What you have just done is STEP #1 of the nursing process--performed an assessment. You determine that you have a flat tire. You have just done STEP #2 of the nursing process--made a diagnosis. The little squirrel starts running like crazy in the wheel up in your brain. "What do I do?" you are thinking. You could call AAA. No, you can save the money and do it yourself. You can replace the tire by changing out the flat one with the spare in the trunk. Good thing you took that class in how to do simple maintenance and repairs on a car! You have just done STEP #3 of the nursing process--planning (developed a goal and intervention). You get the jack and spare tire out of the trunk, roll up your sleeves and get to work. You have just done STEP #4 of the nursing process--implementation of the plan. After the new tire is installed you put the flat one in the trunk along with the jack, dust yourself off, take a long drink of that bottle of water you had with you and prepare to drive off. You begin slowly to test the feel as you drive. Good. Everything seems fine. The spare tire seems to be OK and off you go and on your way. You have just done STEP #5 of the nursing process--evaluation (determined if your goal was met).
hi i found this site, it is for humans but gives you a bit of insight. http://www.pterrywave.com/nursing/care%20plans/Nursing%20Care%20Plans%20... i think the handbook of vet nursing by orpet and welsh covers it. i'll check when in work Weds eve :-)
also if you go on the vetnurse.co.uk and then nurse wiki on the rhs is a care plan you can download :-)

HI
I think other people have commented in the past that more is best with the assignments and as long as you make sense and have a structured plan so you don't waffle you shoudn't go wrong. Then once you have your feedback from the tutor either on the first one or all three you'll know how to go for the rest.
As for the nursing plans Vicky Aspinell explains them in her book but if you want it in more depth then if you google them it normally comes up with examples and journals etc.
Hope that helps, let us know how you fare, and if I find any useful pages or journals on nursing plans I will let you know.

Hi guys
I'm on the new intake and still feeling very excited and motivated. My tutor gave me the ivis and google scholar advanced as good search engines for the journals. Also, some of the vets in your practice may have access to journals so worth an ask. Alternatively, you can get some of the journals by typing the journal into google and signing up for free to obtain some.
The only thing i'm slightly confused by is the structure/layout of the assignments. I'm used to referencing assignments and hope we won't loose marks for not doing so with these. Also, the word count? No guide as such, just that we need to be concise. I'm a rambler so a bit of a worry.
Nice to have this forum to keep in touch and see how everyone is feeling.
Ali x
Hi Ali,
Hope your getting on OK with everything? Just to confirm for you, if you do cite any articles/textbooks/journals etc you should reference them as you usually would. Your tutor would ask to see these if they were not included :)
As you say there is no word count for the assignments, so don't worry about putting too much in, your answers can be as long as you think they need to be. If you're not sure, you can always submit your first outcomes or even drafts for some feedback from your tutor if you want to check you're heading in the right direction.
Thanks, Clare
Hi Alicat,
Thanks for the information about looking up the journals. I just wondered which journals you were able to sign up for free. I have been finding it a bit of a minefield with the journals so have been focussing on the course notes. I was not sure about word counts either so will wait and see how my first submission gets on before sending the next 2 outcomes.
Great to have the forum to discuss the work!
Hi I am a new student from September intake, have read nearly all three units, struggling to get my head around some of the equitment they talk about that I don't use very often or ever! But i'm sure we will all get there, was really motivated but at the moment working six nights on and six off i'm struggling to get my head around it but again I'm sure it will start flowing shortly.
may be worth calling nearby practices to see if they have the eqpt and if you could go in for a demo :-)
Hey guys!
I have started the course this September, and as a lot of you, struggle to find the reading list.... did any of you managed to find it??
I am just starting the course and wondered how much is expected on each assignment. How is everyone finding it? I need help getting motivated
Hello, Me too!
How've you found finding the journal articals on the reading list? I've had great difficulty, can only seem to get abstracts and finding it very frustrating!! Have you had a chance to do the self- assesment question? There are loads of errors in them, not very helpful when you are self asessing!! My motivation is depliting rapidly!!
Hi i'e just started too :-) Journals can be found at http://www.ivis.org/home.asp and also Google scholar (found on the more drop down list next to the gmail bit on the top lhs of the google bar at the top!!!).
There are mistakes and 'the powers that be' have been made aware so will be sorted.
We've only had it for a week so i'm still feeling quite motivated. I'm making sure i do a bit of reading and note taking at least a few times a week and i'm also taking it into work for those few and far between quiet times.
Were you able to find the 1st article on the list, below the coma scale? I've tried both means suggested and still getting no results. soooo time consuming :(
Nope :-( had trouble with the others too, just get the abstracts but not the full article. Boo!!
Hi ladies,
While the journal access issue is being resolved, I may be able to help if you let me know the specific article you are trying to get hold off. I stress the 'may' but happy to have a look if I can access it by other means. You can use the Contact Us link below at the bottom of the page to email me.
Shailen
thank-you, will take you up on that later when time is less precious and a 2 yr old hasn't turned feral on me!!
Amanda-Jane
i know i found that too. I have not managed to access any journals yet, will let you know when i do. I need to try to get into it a bit more. Hope it goes well for you
Thanks, that would be great, Good luck with the motivation! ;)
Hi anyone taking the exam next week?
hi, i was just wondering if there are any people that started the course in the latest intake using this forum?
Hi Leanne, I started the course in the latest intake. Popped on here at the beginning but no one seemed to be around. It would be great to get chatting to others in this intake. I signed up for the course when work (and my life) was a bit quiet, and of course now it's all gone crazy and I have studying and deadlines on top! Struggling a bit but need to be much more disciplined. How are you finding it?
hey lg,
ha i feel pretty much the same as you! came on here no one around and my life was pretty muh quiet too and over the summer everything is goin on. finding the course interesting, just shocks me how much ive forgotton from when i did my finals 10 years ago :-/ full time and studying im finding hard just hope i pass and remember it all :-(
